Practicing Presence
Life is fleeting. Time is our greatest gift and yet we fall short of living in the present moment while looking forward to the next thing or distracting ourselves with something other than what is happening right now. The beautiful present moment is the only real thing we have.
The summer is always an odd time. As a teacher, the past 17 years has been a time to rest and recharge (mostly), but yet I always feel like I have to cram everything into two short months before life gets busy again. Now with building a brand and working on projects to build a legacy and future for my family, summer feels a bit different and it has been hard to stay in the present.
Trying to spend quality time with my daughter is my #1 priority and I have to remind myself that she will only be this small for a limited amount of time. The pull to work, work, work while also spending time with her can feel like a really tough place to be in sometimes. Balance comes to mind as I have to juggle many different hats.
In our yoga practice, we are always working on balance. Whether it’s in a half-moon pose or tree pose, we have to focus on what is right in front of us, our drishti, while trying to balance in the challenging pose. Similarly, giving focus to what is important in our lives in the moment is the only way we can fully embrace the present.
